This map displays group quarters population in the 2020 US census. While the census counts most people in traditional “housing units” (e.g. a house, apartment, or mobile home), a small portion - about 3% - live in what are known as group quarters. This includes university student housing, adult correctional facilities, juvenile facilities, nursing homes, and military quarters. This data is particularly relevant to redistricting because these categories often represent concentrated blocks of like-minded voters. And how public officials tally these groups when drawing district lines is often contentious. Read our blog post to learn more and access this data.
